Pisa is known worldwide for its Leaning Tower (the bell tower) of the city's cathedral. The height of the tower is 55.86 m (183.27 ft) from the ground on the low side and 56.70 m (186.02 ft) on the high side. |
The Duomo (cathedral), the Baptistery, the Leaning Tower, and the Cemetery, are all part of the Piazza del Duomo ("Cathedral Square") or Piazza dei Miracoli ("Square of Miracles"). |
The Baptistery, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and is the largest baptistery in Italy. |
The Duomo is a medieval cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta (St. Mary of the Assumption). Construction began in 1064. |
Efforts to compensate for the tilt, the engineers in (1272) built the upper floors (4-8) with one side taller than the other. Because of this, the tower is actually curved. |
The final solution (1990–2001) of structural strengthening, to prevent the collapse of the tower was to slightly straighten the tower to a safer angle, by removing 38 cubic meters (50 cubic yards) of soil from underneath the raised end, cables were cinched around the third level to prevent further tilting and 800 tones of lead counterweights were added to the raised end of the base. The tower was straightened by 45 centimeters (18 inches), returning to its 1838 position.
Below are a couple fountains around town. |
